FORM & SPACE by Alessandra Taccia

I'm an Italian artist living and working in Cambridge, where I create paintings and ceramics from my small studio.
My subject matter is Still Life, I'm drawn to domestic objects, to find the sublime in the menial tasks of everyday life.
I'm interested in the relationship between form and space and especially in the negative space created by objects.
I'm inspired by ancient artifacts from the Mediterranean area and the Far East, by Zen philosophy and Theosophy.
I like simple forms and texture, both in my paintings and ceramics; I use a restrained
colour palette favouring muted hues and matt surfaces, which in ceramic I try to achieve by applying dry glazes or simply leaving the exterior unglazed. I create my ceramics with hand building techniques, most pieces originate from pinch pots and are then developed through a coiling process. My works are both functional and sculptural and I like to think they are used everyday thus elevating the experience of daily rituals.
