Lior Hod

Lior Hod graduated from Central St Martins, London, in 2005 after gaining a BA in Ceramic Design. Right from the start Lior was fascinated with the casting process, which is more closely associated with manufacturing. Later he pursued the areas of hand building and experimented with forms and textures. Upon graduation, Lior worked as an assistant in a ceramics studio, and several art and ceramics galleries, as well as training and working as a florist. Recently he has worked in design related retailing. His work has been exhibited and sold through the Sotis Filippides Gallery in London’s Oxo Tower and at many of the Open Studio events at Pullen’s Yard. Lior's principle interest lies in exploring form and surface patterns within his ceramic work: "I enjoy the intimacy of handling the material and the textures and forms that can be created. I want the objects to be simple and clear, although the methods of making can be innovative and unusual." Lior frequently experiments with new methods of building plaster moulds and alternative ways of porcelain casting. In a recent series of porcelain vases he used a particular method of casting that resulted in a different surface texture for each piece. By controlling the timing of the pouring and the volume of the slip into the mould during the lengthy casting process, the fired and glazed vase reflects in its appearance, each step of the process: each surface line is evidence of a unit of time in its making. Each vase reflects the slight differences in the making process. Although the making is a very controlled series of steps, the results, like in nature, are random and varied. "The basis for my work is the fusion between art, craft and design. And some quirkiness."
