Catherine and Matt West are ceramicists and designers working under the name Pottery West. Our studio practice encompasses production pottery, design and research. We established our first studio in 2014 and it quickly became obvious that we wanted to make pieces that are directly useful to people. We started to design tableware and homeware, Matt at the wheel, Catherine working with glazes. In the early days our design ethos was to create simple and minimal forms with intricate glazes. In 2016 we moved to Persistence Works, a purpose-built studio building in Sheffield city centre, managed by the Yorkshire Artspace and designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley. Here we simplified our designs to create our first cohesive tableware collection which launched at London Design Week. In 2018 we moved to a larger workspace on the top floor overlooking the city and the not so faraway Peak District. Here we continue to work together to design and craft functional ware, but now with a greater emphasis on material exploration and research. Prior to working at Pottery West, Matt studied Design at Goldsmiths University and after graduating in 2010 worked on a variety of design projects before training and working as a baker. Catherine studied Fine Art Practice at Goldsmiths and has since worked in a number of writing and marketing-related roles, most recently for an architectural practice.
