This striking vessel was created by Barry Stedman from slabs of red earthenware clay thrown on the wheel. The surfaces of his simple forms act as canvases, and are painted with coloured slips, stains, oxides and glaze in fluid brushstrokes to evoke the landscape and patterns in the sky. Barry works in series' which are informed by drawing or painting in his garden studio by the river Flit in Bedford, and the urgency that working in the open air demands. Vessels are fired multiple times and the resulting colours and tones are only revealed after the final firing, so there is an element of chance and surprise in Steadman’s pieces which informs their individuality and spontaneity.
