Catherine has been making clay sculpture since completing her degree course in Ceramics at Camberwell College of Art in 1998. She imediately set up studio with five others, at The Arches in Peckham, showing and selling her work through regular open studio events, group shows, craft fairs and galleries. Now working from a studio in Nunhead, she divides her time between teaching art, her own practise and looking after her new son.
Catherine’s figurative sculpture is focused on the female form. A love of clay and anatomy combine in her work. The figures have exaggerated proportions, elegant long legs and powerful large feet. A lot of the figures are peering through binoculars, as searching and calling have been important themes in her work. Her sculptures vary in size, from small shelf sitters to larger tall standing pieces. The forms are hand built in crank clay at her south London studio and fired high to stoneware with a sparkly Lithium glaze and added decals.
