Description:

A medium vessel, hand crafted by artist Celia Dowson. Using black and white porcelain, Dowson fires then sands each vessel to reveal layers of marks and tones. She adds a satin white glaze inside before an additional firing process. The cups are then polished by hand, achieving a soft, silken finish.

This vessel has a black ‘seascape’ detail in the centre towards the base, with subtle shades blending together on the surface. Dowson’s mark making is influenced by movement in nature and captures continuously evolving landscapes.

About the Artist

Celia Dowson is an artist whose ceramics and cast glass objects go far beyond their functional use. Celia graduated with a BA in Ceramic Design from Central Saint Martins in 2014, before receiving her MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2018.

Celia works with the different properties of glass and porcelain to evoke the movement of nature in different ways. Her porcelain vessels represent evolving landscapes, mountainscapes and seascapes through marks and gestures. Her glass pieces vary in thickness, causing subtle gradations in colour. This reflects the colours, changing light and mystery of the natural world.

Celia’s work has been exhibited widely and is part of two museum collections, Bullseye Projects in Portland, USA and the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan. Her unique and skillful manipulation of ceramics and glass have earned her awards such as the 2020 Wallpaper* Design Award and the 2019 FRANZ Rising Star Award.
