Renowned potter Nicola Tassie creates well-crafted objects and functional ceramics that enrich daily life. Nicola’s work is a prime example of the crossovers between art and craft; her domestic functional-ware evokes familiarity within the viewer, yet due to her progressive style of construction, they become more than jugs, carafes or bottles, they are elevated into the realm of sculpture. Her forms and surface decoration are enhanced by the unique glazes and hand-etched inlays of lines she uses in her work.
“The play between the volume of the object and its perception is something that has intrigued me throughout my ceramic making. In my work the surface is cut with fine scalpel lines of varying density that are then filled in with black iron oxide to create a dense zone of black that masks the ellipses of the rims and edges of the cylinders.”
