Shun Kumagai Turquoise vase

Maker: Shun Kumagai

Regular price £600.00

Handmade in Japan

Dimensions: ø 12cm x h 10cm

Materials: Glass, natural metal oxides

Method:  Shun Kumagai creates his beautifully anachronistic glass pieces by combining lost wax casting with a coil building technique, traditionally used in with clay. The glass is coloured with natural metal oxides like copper, iron, or cobalt, and traces of clay and earth.

Description: Kumagai's cast glass pieces evoke the history of the earliest discoveries in glass craft in Ancient Rome, and Greece, while also sharing the modesty of Japanese ceramic traditions. The unique form of each pot is built by hand in wax that perishes during the process. During the casting, molten glass is combined with metal oxides, and traces of clay that embellish the work with alchemical colouring, and an earthy satin finish.

Above all the beauty of this work lies in how it captures and filters light through layers of bold colour and unassuming texture. With each look this work will reveal another poetic detail of material phenomenon.

About the Artist: Shun Kumagai was born in Akita, Japan, where he earned his degree in glass craft. He refined his distinct approach to the material working in Toyama for 5 years. His glass studio is now based in his home town Akita.
