Description:
Ryo Watanabe is a highly sought-after artist who works with an array of metals: brass, copper, and iron. He uses traditional techniques such as scorching, to build breath-taking objects. In addition to this, Watanabe uses alternative, non-traditional methods that allow nature to take control by stacking metal sheets outside, where the elements decide how the work develops. This practice can take longer than a year, by waiting until the rust spreads, that in time generates beautifully organic marks that flow across the piece.
Watanabe’s body of objects have a quiet, mysterious presence, yet are simultaneously made using a busy and noisy process. Crafted from iron, the surface is heated, welded and hammered using a wooden mallet and mortar to form the elaborate and impressive shape that is this iron object. He says that the neutral tones from the iron reflect the rough texture of an old anvil. Each iron object holds a pebble inside. When picked up, it makes a sound, creating a feeling of peace and serenity.
About the Artist
Born in Japan in 1978, Ryo Watanabe is an acclaimed artist who uses his masterly hand to capture the understated beauty in our everyday life. Graduating in 2001 from Musashino Art University, his practice is informed by nature, emanating the essence of his environment in the materials he uses. Using traditional materials such as brass and iron, Watanabe makes one-of-a-kind objects with relaxed shapes, soft curves and curled bodies, mirroring nuts and twigs, fallen leaves and pebbles gathered on his daily walks.
Watanabe describes the textured surface of pieces as imagining tearing off the surface of the stone and turning it into a vessel which can be kept in one’s pocket. He envisions the owner cherishing life’s simple moments with his original and functional works of art.
